Winter 2013

A complimentary programming tool for GVSU faculty to connect students to co-curricular learning.

Introduction

Dear Faculty,

In order to enhance student learning, the Division of Student Services develops programming that includes specific learning outcomes for students. Based on the Liberal Education & America’s Promise (LEAP) Essential Learning Outcomes, these programs may be useful as you seek ways to complement the learning that occurs in your classrooms. The Division of Student Services focuses program outcomes on the following LEAP outcomes

*Foundations and Skills for Lifelong Learning
          *Civic Responsibility
          *Integrative Learning
          *Critical Thinking
          *Intercultural Knowledge and Competence
          *Ethical Reasoning

Eighty-two percent of students surveyed in the 2011 Student Life Survey indicated that “encouragement by a professor” was a major factor in deciding to attend out-of-class programs. I encourage you to make students aware of the range of co-curricular activities available to them on campus, and to consider incorporating one of more of these programs into your own course syllabi. A few of our more than 65 programs are highlighted in this newsletter. Additional programs and more details can be found at www.gvsu.edu/abc.

Sincerely,
H. Bart Merkle
Vice Provost for Student Affairs
and Dean of Students
